What Is Ski and Snowboard Servicing?

Ski and snowboard servicing is the routine maintenance that keeps your equipment safe, predictable and fast.

A full service resets the base, sharpens and bevels the edges, repairs any damage, and works fresh wax deep into the base so it glides and protects for longer.

Every pair of skis tells us something when it comes into the workshop: dull edges after a week on hard-packed pistes, a dry white base from man-made snow, a gouge from a rock hidden under fresh snow. Left alone, small problems grow. Dry bases slow down, damaged edges rust, and deep gouges can let water into the core.

A service at The Skiers Lounge typically covers:

  • Inspection and base clean, so we can see exactly what needs doing
  • Base grinding to flatten the base and remove scratches
  • Edge tuning to the manufacturer’s angles, or to your own preference
  • Base repairs with P-Tex, metal grip, patches or epoxy, depending on the damage
  • Stone grind structure, which helps the base shed water and hold wax
  • Infra-red waxing and hand finishing, matched to where and when you’re skiing
  • A binding check, with full release testing available on our Wintersteiger test machine

We’ve been servicing skis and snowboards for over 20 years, and we’ll always explain what we’ve done and why. If a repair isn’t worth the cost, we’ll tell you.

Why Service Your Skis or Snowboard?

Freshly structured and waxed ski base

Smoother glide in all snow conditions

A properly waxed base runs faster and more evenly, from icy mornings to slushy afternoons. Tell us where and when you’re skiing and we’ll match the wax to the conditions.

Checking a ski edge angle with a bevel gauge

Reliable grip on hard snow

Sharp, correctly bevelled edges bite on ice and hold through the turn. We detune tips and tails so the ski feels predictable, then run a 3-step quality check.

Longer life for your equipment

Regular servicing lets us spot deeper gouges, base burn, edge damage and binding problems early, before they become expensive.

Skier carving a confident turn on piste

More confidence, less effort

Skis that behave the same way every turn let you relax and ski better, with less effort by the end of the day.

Snowboarders: please remove your bindings before dropping off. If you’re unsure how, we’ll show you, and removal and marking up your stance costs £5.

Boards shouldn’t be stored with bindings on, as this can pull the base out of shape under the binding and cost you glide.

Infra-Red Ski Waxing

Our WaxFuture infra-red system works wax evenly and deeply into the base instead of leaving it sitting on the surface.

Better saturation means the wax lasts longer on snow. Infra-red waxing is now included in every Bronze, Silver and Gold service. See the machine at work in the films below.

Ski Binding Testing and DIN Setting

  • Full binding test on our Wintersteiger test machine £30
  • DIN adjustment and visual inspection £10

A visual check can’t tell you whether a binding still releases at the right setting. Our Wintersteiger machine, one of only two active in the UK, measures the release of the toe and heel and gives you a printed report.

If a binding fails, we’ll talk you through your options and credit the test fee against new bindings or skis.

Ski Servicing FAQs

How often should I service my skis?

Most recreational skiers benefit from a full service once a season, ideally before your trip so edges and wax are fresh. If you ski more than two weeks a year, or mostly on hard or artificial snow, a mid-season edge and wax is worth doing.

Do new skis need waxing?

Yes. Most new skis leave the factory with only a thin coat of wax. Our Wax Only service prepares the base properly before its first day.

How much does a ski service cost?

Services start at £40 for Bronze, £65 for Silver and £95 for Gold. Snowboards are the same price.

Which service do my skis need?

Bronze for skis in good condition, Silver if there’s base damage up to 30cm, and Gold if a patch or epoxy repair is needed. If you’re not sure, bring them in and we’ll advise.

How long does servicing take?

Current turnaround is shown at the top of the page, and updated regularly as it changes with demand.

Do I need to book?

Not for standard servicing. While-you-wait servicing must be booked in advance.

Can I drop off out of hours?

Yes. Our 24/7 lockers let you drop off and collect at any time.

Storage and Collection

Please collect your equipment within 7 working days of service completion.

Uncollected gear without prior arrangement may incur storage fees.
